Layered Cut and Bob in Cheonho, Seoul: Why Head Shape Comes First

With a layered cut or a bob, the shape of your head and face matters more than the length. Put the same layers into two different head shapes and they fall along the face in two different ways. That is why the designers who handle most of the cuts at Eco Jardin Cheonho look at your head shape and face shape before they settle on a length.

Below is how three of them approach it, which perms they look at alongside a cut, and who to book for the style you have in mind.

Associate Director Nayeon — bobs and layers built around your head shape

“When the shape of the head changes, the line of the face changes.” Associate Director Nayeon does not decide the length first. Nayeon looks at the shape of your head before anything else, then designs the bob or layered cut to suit it. When your hair needs more volume, a digital perm or a root perm is considered alongside the cut. Associate Director Nayeon's page

Senior Stylist Only — 23 years of short cuts and bobs

“Eighty per cent of what bothers you about your hair is solved by the cut.” Senior Stylist Only has been cutting short hair and bobs for 23 years. Only's training runs through Park Seung-chul Hair Studio, the Juno Hair Leadership Course, Vidal Sassoon Korea and the Pivot Point Cut course, and Only also takes on layered cuts, baby perms and repair magic perms. You can see Only's work on the YouTube channel 헤어디자이너온리 (“Hair Designer Only” in Korean). Senior Stylist Only's page

On the salon's blog, Only has set out the consultation for a layered cut with a setting perm in this order:

  • Check the condition of your hair before the service
  • Adjust the length of the cut to suit your face shape
  • Talk through the direction and thickness of the perm curls

The layers tidy up the outline of the face, and the perm adds a wave that runs from a C-curl into an S-curl. The aim is not a perm that is hard to manage, but hair that falls into shape simply by drying it. Even straight hair or very thick hair can be styled so that it feels light rather than heavy. At home, dry your hair while scrunching it gently with your fingers to bring the curls back, and Only recommends touching up the root volume every two to three months.

Leaf cut — when a round face is the concern

Only does not see the leaf cut as simply a cut with layers added. It is a design that plans the face shape and the flow of the hair together. For guests who worry about a round face, Only places the layers so that the jawline looks softer, and even considers the way the strands lift and scatter as you move. Because it falls into shape with one or two blow-drys, it is the cut Only suggests for busy office workers and for anyone who wants a natural style.

Associate Director Su-jin — short layered cuts

Associate Director Su-jin designs short layered cuts by looking at your face shape and proportions. For Su-jin, a short cut is not a question of length but of balance: flattering the face shape and bringing out the neckline. That is why Su-jin takes plenty of time over the consultation before cutting, aiming for a silhouette that works whether your hair is tied up, worn down or blow-dried. The height of the layers is adjusted to your face shape, combined with a natural C-curl or an asymmetric layered style. Associate Director Su-jin's page

Perms to consider with your cut

If you would like more volume in a layered cut or a bob, it is worth looking at a perm at the same time. The perm menu at the Cheonho salon is divided like this:

  • Fringe perm, root perm
  • Premium · Royal · Dia perm
  • Premium · Royal · Dia digital perm
  • Premium · Royal · Dia magic setting
  • Women's set: root perm + sleek magic
  • Men's set: design perm + line-down perm

Which perm is right for you is decided in the consultation, once the condition of your hair and the shape of your cut have been looked at.

FAQ

I can't decide whether a layered cut or a bob would suit me.
In the consultation we first look at your head shape, your face shape and how you usually style your hair. The length is decided after that.
Can I have a setting perm together with a layered cut?
It is a combination Senior Stylist Only often recommends. The layers tidy up the outline of the face and a C-curl to S-curl wave is added, designed so your hair falls into shape simply by drying it.
Which cut works best for a round face?
Senior Stylist Only designs a leaf cut, placing the layers so the jawline looks softer. The final choice is made in the consultation, taking the flow of your hair into account as well.
How often does a setting perm need touching up?
Senior Stylist Only recommends touching up the root volume every two to three months. At home, dry your hair while scrunching it with your fingers to bring the curls back.
How much does a cut cost?
It depends on your designer, from the fringe cut up to the director cut. We will let you know when you book or during your consultation.
Can I choose my designer?
Yes. Simply pick the designer you want when you book through Naver Booking.
